It was a great event ran my Brian Smakintrees on a beautiful course designed and maintained by the Morris’s.  The course was very well taken care of and prepped for tournament play.  For lunch the Morris’s provided hot dogs, Da Bear brought Chille, and Mrs. B made corn bread.  Everything was done perfect and it was such a great event.  Every hole was birdieable but not ever hole was easy.  Two aces on the course Trevor in the first round on hole 7 with an aviar and Me on hole 12 with a classic roc.  I thank all  who had helped with the event and am always looking forward to the next event at Beaver Branch.

White Clay

Tis the Season to be frustrated at white clay. All though i was just up there the other day and everything was freshly cut, we all know that will not last long.  Get your rounds in there as soon as you can because within the next month white clays rough will be hellish.  The stickers will be getting thicker and the grass will get taller.  I like to think of white clay as a corse with a major personality complex.  I understand every course changes depending on the season but i feel white clay exemplifies that.  The rough can get so bad on some holes it can make you double think certain routes.

No matter what White clay is a great course to play for anyone at all levels.  Despite the frustration of the rough the course is a great course for beginners.  It is short and mostly field shots.  It offers great scenery and a very easy to follow course that has been there so long  fair ways are unmistakable.  White Clays signature hole would have to be 17.  It is an elevated tee shot through two giant tress and over a well-groomed hedge.

White clay has a weekly doubles tournament ran every thursday evening at 5:30pm by Mike Karp.  Mike is always looking for new people and runs a fair event.  Doubles is a great way to meet people in the disc golf community and learn the sport.

Carousel Park

The recent word around the disc golf community in Delaware seems to be about the complaints that the park is receiving about disc golf players.  This post is to all who have played and plan on playing the course.  It is a gorgeous course that us disc golfers have been blessed with.  To all who have been involved in DE disc golf for a long time know this better than me but de disc golfers are a lucky group when it comes to courses.  That is only because a lot of time and work is donated into the progression of disc golf in Delaware.  To be a disc golfer, casual or avid, one should understand the time and work that a lot of great people put into these courses.

As far as carousel is concerned the way I see it is everything else was there before us.  I understand it is a public park and we are public.  To be fully accepted into the park we need to be courteous to all other’s enjoying the park.  If there are horses walking by stop and let them go.  Carousel is a beautiful course  and a five-minute pause to take in the scenery is not going to hurt anyone.  If there is people walking wave, say hello, and wait.  If you see others being disrespectful on the course mention to them that behavior such as that has an impact on a lot of good people who truly enjoy the sport.

There is no reason that disc golfers can’t be embraced by others, all it takes is alittle courtesy .  Dealing with people before i know its hard but by taking the first step and being proactively courteous will help us keep amazing courses like Carousel.  This post is not directed towards anyone in particular and I know most who read this are not part of the problem.  I dont know any one this would be directed at. Everyone I have interacted with through this sport has been courteous and I doubt are a part of the problem. The trouble makers are out there so keep and eye out and don’t be scared to say anything I GOT YOUR BACK!!!

Keep on Rippin!

BirdieFest 2010

Wednesday evening at doubles I was lucky enough to be partnered up with Brian Smakingtrees. Through out the course of play he spoke about the upcoming birdiefest on May 1.  Birdiefest is located on a private course down in Smyrna Delaware called Beaver Branch.  Beaver Branch is owned and maintained by the morris family and is open to the public for special events only.  It is a very well designed, fun, and technical course that offers pond, wood and field shots.  I was able to make it down last year for a tournament and the first thing the struck me was the fact I was parking in someones driveway to play a disc golf tournament.  I was not sure really what to expect until I saw that the Morris’s had a stand-alone car garage turned into a disc golf club house.  Immediately I was pumped to play this course.

The course has a lot to offer but it gave me something I was not used to, a sence of being surrounded by people who are all their to enjoy the same sport.  Going from playing in state parks where anything is possible, to playing a course where it is strictly disc golf was pretty cool. The Morris’s also provided plenty of water and lunch between the two rounds as well a pond for the pond monster to swim in.  Over all i urge all who have the opportunity to play in BirdiFest to attend the event and enjoy a unique course that has a lot to offer.

About me

My name is Greg and I have been playing disc golf for the past 6 years.  I began playing every once in a while and progressively transitioned into playing whenever i have the chance.  I began just playing whenever with my friends for lack of anything else to do.  The sport quickly grew on me and my knowledge and collection of disc began to grow.  That is one of the things that I love about this sport, I can constantly grow and learn.  Every day I play a round of disc golf I find my self with a shot that I have never had to make so I learn to adapt and make new throws.  I also began to understand that the surrounding community of disc golf is that of outstanding people.  I have met amazing, down to earth, people that are always willing to teach me something new.

I began playing in tournaments with my friends for the past two years or so when we can.  We do not attend every tournament but try to get out to more than we have in the past.  I began playing in the armature division until i began placing in the tope three .  I then advanced to advance armature where I continue to play to this day.  I am currently finding a great amount of competition in this division so plan continuing to play in it until I play out of it.  I have been playing with Delaware Tags for the past two years and i finished last year with Tag 45 and Currently have 23 for 2010.

Tockwogh

Let me start with saying wow!  Being apart of Delaware disc golfers for several years now i have always heard the wonderful stories that surround the months before and after this event.  Due to scheduling problems me and my friends were never able to make the trip before this year.  With that being said i dont think we will ever have scheduling problems that weekend again because its already booked with Tockwogh.  Not only was the golf course amazing to play, with its variety and views, but the people who attended this event were amazing.  Every single person there was friendly and willing to lend a hand.

Tockwogh  is a summer YMCA camp located on the Chesapeake bay. It immediately reminded me of every movie i saw about summer camps.  It had the dinning hall decorated in children’s arts and crafts, it had numerous activities for the kids that made me want to be one again, and carried with it an atmosphere of joy.  I had the pleasure to meet the tournament Director Da Bear.  Da Bear is also a camp counsler and does numerous things to better the camp and the experience people have there.  All and all it was a great experience and i look forward to next year.  I recommend this event to all from the avid golfer to the once in a while golfer, it is fun for all.

Delaware Disc golf Doubles (Lums)

Time has changed, the sun is sticking around, shorts are coming out, and the chatter has begun. It’s time for weekly disc golf doubles in Delaware.  historically in Delaware north of the canal

 Mondays doubles are at Brandywine

Tuesdays are at Nixon and Pennsville,

Wednesdays are at  Lums

Thursdays are at Whiteclay

I happened to get out to Lums last weds 3/24 and play around of disc golf with Donnie and Herb.  Donnie, who ran doubles last year,  plans on doing so again this year with the aid of Smakintrees.  As far as the condition of lums it was still very soggy but all holes were playable and double should begin next Wednesday.  Hole three, which has been submerged since the snow finally melted, was very muddy neer the pin but we played it with no trouble (except the trees). Hole One as well is very soft mud neer the pin but plays fine.  the tree down on hole 12 is still to the side and its stump still rises 3 feet into the fairway.  Besides the mud in some areas of the corse it is playing very well still maintaining a lot of its winter holes or local routes.   Due to past experience when you begin to notice the holes at lums closing their already closed.   Local player Michelle has done and continues to do an excellent job of course maintenance, cleaning fairways, cleaning tee-pads, helping take care of liter and many other things.  Looking forward to the upcoming year of golf and especially weekly doubles at lums and results  will be posted post round.
